Biotechnology can draw on a wide range of highly attractive plant compounds to create benefits in many aspects of our daily lives. In collaboration with a research group from the Universidade da Região de Joinville (Univille) in Brazil, we want to use antimicrobial hop ingredients to curb the rampant use of antibiotics in Brazilian poultry farming. When you consider that the well-known addition of hops to our beer has long contributed to the stability of this beverage because of its antimicrobial effect, our approach becomes understandable. Our partners Prof. Dr. Gilmar Sidnei Erzinger and Dr. Sebastian M. Strauch have now visited the Institute of Biochemical Engineering in Erlangen for the first working meeting. We are particularly pleased to be working with Dr. Strauch because he did his doctorate in Erlangen at the Department of Biology and is well known to us from that time.
