Top place in the nationwide €99 bioreactor competition
This year, the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering once again sent a student team to the nationwide €99 bioreactor competition organized by the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD). In this competition, participants work in small groups to design and build their own bioreactor for a specific task – for a maximum budget of €99. The group was supervised by our doctoral students Lea Erbacher and Matthias Tobler.
This year’s task was to build a bioreactor for the production of citric acid using the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. A total of 11 teams from all over Germany traveled to Dresden on July 10 and our students (Anna Gyurácz, Lea Hoffmann, Sven Hörsch Julie Hahlweg) achieved the third-highest citric acid concentration with their wave bioreactor in the practical test. This secured them a place on the podium! Congratulations!
Many thanks to Prof. Thomas Walther and his team from the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering at TUD and to the association “Netzwerk Bioverfahrenstechnik Dresden e.V.” for organizing and hosting the competition.
