Infections with the cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3, also known as koi herpesvirus) cause serious illnesses in carp and considerable economic burdens in affected carp pond farms. For this reason, the infection has been notifiable in Germany since 2005. In various regions of Germany, carp ponds are landscape-defining and important for the water and nature balance, so that effective instruments are needed to monitor and contain the regionally threatening disease in order to preserve these landscapes. To this end, new cell lines were cultivated in this project to detect infectious virus particles. Furthermore, virus variants with attenuated virulence were developed as candidates for live vaccines.

A total of 7 new cell lines from the brain, fins, gills and heart of carp were cultivated and are available for further studies. The new cell lines from the brain and fins of carp proved to be highly susceptible to CyHV-3 and enable to reach high virus titres. Standardized protocols are available for cell culture and reproducible virus propagation. They enable the cultivation of virus as a prerequisite for the production of a vaccine. However, an improvement in CyHV-3 diagnostics could not be achieved.

This project was carried out in close cooperation with researchers from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation, the Fraunhofer-Institution for Marine Biotechnology, the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute and the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety. It was financed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food, due to a resolution of the German Bundestag, via the Federal Institute for Agriculture and Food (project number: 2815HS010).
