The vital link of the broad research activities in our working group of “Aquatic Biotechnology” is the element water. We use our experience in analytical chemistry, cell culture technology, as well as in microbiology to design and/or establish biotechnological processes and solutions. In this process, we study aquatic species (such as microalgae) as sources for value products (unsaturated fatty acids, pigments, bioactive compounds, etc.) as well as sustainable materials (e.g. bioadsorbers) that can be used for recovery of important resources (e.g. rare earth elements) from aquatic sources. Furthermore, the research in the field of aquaculture – especially concerning fish viroses – represents an important part of our work.
